How Artificial Intelligence is helping Sustainability

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) rapidly advances, its impact on both business and our daily lives has become undeniable. AI exhibits capabilities such as image recognition, autonomous driving, facial manipulation in videos, automated article generation, and even the creation of fabricated news.

The breakthrough is enormous. So, why not harness AI to contribute positively to our world?

While many companies are adopting AI, the impact on the environment is not always evident. Often, the primary motivation for adopting AI is to enhance efficiency or reduce costs, yet it frequently results in measurable benefits with far-reaching implications.

The term sustainability was defined in 1987 by the United Nations Brundtland Commission as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

In this post, I talk about AI initiatives that target pressing concerns capable of disrupting this delicate balance, which is crucial for the well-being of generations to come.

1 - Fossil Fuels

Fossil fuels are produced from natural resources containing carbon and hydrogen that burns in the presence of oxygen and produces Carbon Dioxide (CO2).

The most commons are coal, oil, and gas. These nonrenewable resources supply about 80% of the world's energy consumption. This energy is used for electricity, heat, and transportation.

In the realm of transportation, companies use AI to reduce maintenance and fuel expenses. Several instances of AI applications in transportation hold the potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions:

  • Path optimization to reduce travel distances, avoiding traffic congestion
  • Improving drivers' efficiency, using real-time alerts when detecting hazardous behavior, preventing accidents, and increasing fuel efficiency
  • Predictive maintenance plans to extend the life of vehicles and improve efficiency by monitoring motors, breaks, tire pressure, vibration analysis, and thermal imaging.
  • Transportation and logistics optimization to reduce unnecessary trips

Heat is used in many sectors:
  • Optimize processes and components in furnaces and kilns to heat materials to high temperatures
  • Optimize the efficiency of boilers used to produce steam or hot water

The use of AI is also becoming popular to increase electricity efficiency with the advance of smart devices that can track consumption:

  • Energy Management Systems are powered by AI to plan, optimize and control buildings' energy usage according to the demand.
  • Anticipating demand fluctuations through Load Forecasting
  • Improve the efficiency of HVAC and AHU systems
  • Energy efficiency lighting

2 - Waste

Waste generation spans is a big concern from production processes and consumption across various sectors. Many initiatives aim to minimize the generation of resources waste:
  • Demand forecasting using AI to plan production, minimizing overproduction
  • Price recommendation based on demand and expiration date
  • Detection of water leakages detection within distribution networks
  • Smart irrigation to optimize water usage in agriculture
  • Packaging optimization to minimize the amount of plastic being used in products
  • AI do enhance the design of products for a longer lifespan and better fit for a circular economy
By embracing AI and integrating it into sustainable practices, we can pave the way for a greener and more resilient future.

Industries with data science opportunities for creating sustainable environment

If you are a data scientist and try to find jobs using keywords like "data science and sustainability", most likely you won't find many jobs available. A realistic robot in an empty office room at night, turning off the light switch and holding a suitcase  - Created by DALLE.E 3 But just because jobs are not explicitly described as sustainability, it doesn’t mean they don’t exist. To find jobs that can help in the environment, let’s first understand what data science would mean in the context. Sustainability is defined by the United Nations, as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” While Environmental sustainability  is the ability to maintain an ecological balance in our planet’s natural environment and conserve natural resources to support the wellbeing of current and future generations. Some important terms related are: reuse, reduce, repair, repurpose and recycle. (And some more R’s).These te...

Sustainable Data Center with Artificial Intelligence

As we navigate the internet, we don't usually think much or realize how our queries send a request to a server in a data center to retrieve the content.  But the fact is, we don't live without data centers. Data centers host all the web pages in the world, all your bank information, health records, and basically everything that is digital. They run 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, recording everything shared, transacted, and mentioned.  There are approximately 8,000 data centers in the world, and with the rise of social, mobile, analytics, and cloud services worldwide, it is expected a growth rate of 10.9% a year by 2030. With the growth comes a cost. Data Centers have a proportionally big footprint.  They account for approximately 1% of the energy consumed worldwide. The largest existent data center could power 80,000 U.S. households. The primary consumers are the cooling system, the IT system, and the electrical system.  Depending on the energy source (solar, coal, w...
